Jans Polish Sauerkraut Side Dish
Time: 1 hrs 20 mins
Ingredients
- 1 (17 -34 ounce) can canned sauerkraut, drained
- 6 slices bacon
- 1 small onion
Directions
- 1 Fry bacon until just about crisp.
- 2 Place on a paper towel to drain fat.
- 3 Discard fat from frying pan except for about 1 tablespoon.
- 4 Chop onion into 1 inch pieces.
- 5 Place in pan and saute until translucent.
- 6 Place on same paper towel to drain fat.
- 7 In a large pot, place sauerkraut,1 or 2 cans of water, bacon and onion.
- 8 Cook sauerkraut at least one half hour.
- 9 Add salt and pepper to taste.
- 10 Serve.
- 11 Tastes better the next day.
- 12 Optional- You can cook a link (1 pound) of fresh Polish sausage for added flavor and use the meat as part of your meal.
